How many LeetCode problems do you actually need to solve before you're ready? You've seen the answers: 100, 200, 300, one from every category. The numbers vary but they all share the same assumption, that solving enough problems eventually produces readiness.
It doesn't. You're asking a quantity question about a quality problem. The number of problems you've solved tells you how much time you've spent. It says nothing about whether you can handle a problem you haven't seen before. And that's the only thing your interviewer cares about.
Why a number can't answer how many LeetCode problems are enough
LeetCode has over 3,000 problems. Those problems span 75+ distinct algorithmic patterns. If you solve 200 problems randomly, you'll cover some patterns deeply, miss others entirely, and develop uneven ability that feels like progress until an interview exposes the gaps.
The coverage gap is predictable.
Suppose you need working fluency across 15 core patterns to handle most interview questions. Solving 200 problems without a pattern-aware structure means you might see each core pattern 5 to 8 times on average, but some patterns only show up in 3 or 4 of those 200 problems. You'll have strong recall for two pointers because you've seen it 20 times. You'll have almost no exposure to monotonic stack problems because they appeared twice and you skipped the second one.
That unevenness is invisible when you measure progress by count. Your LeetCode profile says 200 solved. It doesn't say "hasn't seen a predicate search problem in three months."
There's a reasonable counterargument here. Number-based goals aren't useless for scoping study time and maintaining motivation. Saying "I'll aim for 150 problems this quarter" gives you a pace. But the number is a scheduling aid, not a readiness signal. Confusing the two is where the problem starts.

What volume-based goals actually measure
When you solve a problem you've never seen, something specific happens in your brain. You read the constraints, search for a matching pattern, and either find one or you don't. If you find one, you construct a solution from the pattern's invariant. If you don't, you guess, trial-and-error your way through, or stare at the screen until time runs out.
Solving lots of problems trains the first part well. You get faster at recognizing problems that look like something you've solved before. Cognitive scientists call this near transfer: the ability to apply learned procedures to situations that closely resemble the training context.
Interviews don't test near transfer. They test far transfer. A whiteboard problem won't look exactly like anything on your practice list. The constraint phrasing is unfamiliar, the variable names are different, and the optimal approach requires combining a pattern you know with a twist you haven't practiced.
This is where problem count falls apart. An engineer who solved 300 problems without ever training the identification step, the part where you look at a new problem's constraints and decide which pattern applies, has 300 instances of near transfer and almost zero far transfer. They've built a large library of solved problems and no mechanism for applying that library to anything new.
The readiness test that replaces the number
The right readiness signal isn't a problem count. It's whether you can solve an unseen medium-difficulty problem in a pattern family you've studied, under time pressure, without hints. That's testable. A number isn't.
Pick a pattern you've studied, say monotonic stack. Find a medium problem in that family that you haven't solved before. Set a 20-minute timer. Hide the problem tags and difficulty label if the platform shows them. Solve it.
If you can identify that the problem requires a monotonic stack from the constraints alone, construct the solution from the pattern's invariant, and finish within the time limit, you have working fluency in that pattern. If you can't, you need more depth on that specific pattern, not more problems in general.
This test is repeatable across every pattern family. Run it on sliding window, two pointers, BFS/DFS, binary search, dynamic programming. Each one either passes or fails independently. Your readiness is the union of patterns where you pass, not the total number of problems in your history.
The advantage of a performance-based signal over a volume-based one is that it's falsifiable. You either pass the test or you don't. There's no ambiguity about whether 200 is "enough" because the question isn't about 200. It's about whether the preparation produced the right capability.
What this looks like when you get it right
You open a problem you've never seen. The description mentions finding the next warmer day for each entry in a temperature array. No tags, no hints, just the description and a timer.
Reading the constraints: "for each element, find the next element that is strictly greater." That's the structural trigger for a monotonic stack. No need to remember a specific problem you solved before. It's familiar because you trained on what makes this pattern apply, not just how to implement it once you already know it applies. The reasoning:

The timer shows fourteen minutes remaining. You haven't googled anything. You haven't seen this exact problem before. But you have trained the identification and construction steps for this pattern family, and that training transferred.
That transfer is what interviewers are actually testing. No problem count guarantees it. Deliberate identification practice produces it.
