Why most mock coding interviews don't work
A mock coding interview is useful only when it replicates real interview constraints. Hidden problem categories, a fixed timer, limited execution attempts, and no access to solutions. Without these, you're practicing recognition, not reasoning under pressure.
Most mock sessions fail on fidelity. A typical one looks like this: you pick a problem from a category you've been studying. It's clearly a graph problem before you read the first line. Twelve execution attempts later, the output matches. Every one of those shortcuts removes a constraint that exists in the real interview.
You end up with a comfortable practice session that feels productive and teaches you almost nothing transferable. You're building near transfer skill, the ability to solve problems similar to ones you've already seen, in conditions nothing like the ones you'll face.
A fair counterargument: low fidelity practice isn't useless, especially early in preparation when you're still learning patterns for the first time. Running through problems without a timer while you're building foundational understanding is fine. But at some point, usually earlier than you'd think, the constraints become the entire point. An interview tests whether you can reason under pressure with an unfamiliar problem. If your practice never includes those conditions, you're training for a different test.
The fidelity requirements for a useful mock interview are specific.
- Problem category is hidden: You don't know whether it's a
sliding window, a graph traversal, or a DP problem until you read the description and identify it yourself. - Timer is fixed: Easy problems get 10 minutes. Mediums get 20. Hards get 30. When time expires, the session is over.
- Execution attempts are limited: Every failed run costs you, exactly like a real assessment.
- No hints, no solution tab: If you're stuck, you stay stuck. That discomfort is the training stimulus.
These aren't arbitrary rules. They're the exact conditions that separate freezing in interviews from performing.
How to run a solo mock coding interview
Running a mock coding interview alone sounds contradictory, but it's the most accessible form of high fidelity practice. The trick is removing your own ability to cheat.
Step 4 in practice: take Longest Substring Without Repeating Characters. The constraint mentions "contiguous range" and "no repeating characters." Those are variable sliding window triggers. Instead of recalling a memorised solution, you recognise the triggers and construct the window bounds from the problem's constraints. Your left pointer advances when a character repeats, your right pointer expands the window, and you track characters with a HashSet.
Each session should take 25-30 minutes including notes. Short enough to fit into a lunch break. The point isn't to replicate a full 45-minute interview every time. It's to create enough pressure that your identification and tracing habits get tested under real conditions, even during a weeknight after work.

How to run a peer mock coding interview
Peer mocks add a dimension solo practice can't: explaining your reasoning out loud while someone watches. That's what a real interview requires, and no amount of solo practice replicates it.
The format needs structure, or the session defaults to collaborative problem solving. Two friends working through a problem together is fun, and it's also the opposite of an interview. In a real round, you're alone with the problem. The interviewer isn't helping. Your peer mock needs to replicate that dynamic.
For the interviewer:
- Pick a problem the candidate hasn't seen. Don't tell them the category.
- Start the timer (20 minutes for mediums). Don't extend it.
- Stay quiet. Don't nod, don't hint, don't react to mistakes. Your job is to observe, not guide.
- Note three things: where the candidate paused longest, whether they identified the pattern before coding, and whether they traced their solution mentally before running it.
For the candidate:
- Think out loud. Genuinely narrate your reasoning. "The constraint says 'contiguous range,' so I'm thinking sliding window. Let me check whether the window size is fixed or variable."
- When you're stuck, say so. "I'm stuck on how to handle the duplicate check inside the window. Let me step back and think about what invariant the window needs to maintain."
- Don't ask for hints. Sit with the discomfort.
The feedback session (5 minutes, immediately after):
Don't start with whether the solution was correct. Start with process. Did the candidate spend time identifying the pattern before coding? Did they trace through an example before running code? Where did their reasoning break down, and was it at the identification stage, the implementation stage, or edge cases?
The question "could they solve something similar with the same method?" matters more than "did they solve this one?" A candidate who identified the right pattern but ran out of time on implementation is in a very different spot from one who never recognised what the problem was asking. That's the gap between near transfer and far transfer.
What to track after every session
It's tempting to finish a mock interview and move on. That throws away the most useful part. After every mock, solo or peer, answer four questions in writing:
- 1Did you identify the pattern before coding?
If not, what was the problem's structural signal you missed? Write it down. Next time you see a similar signal, you'll catch it. - 2Where did you get stuck?
This matters more than whether you solved it. Being stuck on which pattern to use is a different problem from being stuck on how to code it, and they need different fixes. If you're failing at figuring out which pattern to use, you need more practice recognizing which pattern fits, specifically the identification lessons that teach the structural signals for each pattern. If you're failing at the coding stage, you need more practice with that specific pattern's mechanics, which is a less fundamental issue. - 3Did you trace your solution mentally before running it?
If you ran code hoping it would work, that's a process problem. Build the habit of mental dry runs before executing. This single habit, tracing variable state through 3-4 iterations before touching the run button, eliminates the majority of runtime debugging that eats interview time. - 4Did you finish within the time limit?
Most time overruns come from skipping identification and jumping into code that turns out to be the wrong method. If you notice a pattern of time overruns across multiple sessions, the fix is usually spending more time reading constraints upfront, not typing faster.
Over weeks, this log becomes more useful than the sessions themselves. It tells you where your preparation has weak spots and whether those weak spots are closing. Keep a log for three to four weeks and you'll probably notice something you didn't expect. They assume their problem is "not knowing enough algorithms," but the data usually points somewhere more specific. Maybe they're consistently failing to spot the right pattern on graph problems but doing fine on arrays. Maybe they're identifying correctly but running out of time because they skip the mental trace and debug for ten minutes instead. The log surfaces this. Without it, every failed mock feels the same, and the fix is always "do more problems." With it, the fix is targeted and the improvement is measurable.
What consistent mock practice produces
Practicing under real constraints and practicing without them produce completely different results in an interview. One spends the first three minutes reading, identifying, and sketching. The other starts typing in thirty seconds and rewrites their solution twice.
