Two Engineers, 300 Problems, Different Outcomes
Each engineer spent four months preparing. They worked evenings and weekends. They hit the same problem count milestones at roughly the same pace.
Engineer A ground through problems randomly. Pick a topic, attempt a medium, check the solution when stuck, move on. By problem 300, she'd seen every major category. Two pointers, sliding windows, BFS, dynamic programming. She could follow any solution explanation and think "that makes sense." But when Google gave her an unfamiliar graph problem with a constraint she hadn't seen before, she froze. She recognised the general area but couldn't construct the specific approach.
Engineer B followed a guided path. Fewer problems, but each one built on the previous. Before attempting a variable sliding window problem, she'd already studied why the pattern exists, what constraint signatures trigger it, and how to trace the window state frame by frame. By problem 150, she could open a novel medium and identify the pattern from the constraints alone.
The raw numbers were identical at month two. By month four, the outcomes diverged completely. Grinding and guided learning produce different growth curves. Grinding builds rapid familiarity but plateaus after 150-200 problems once pattern recognition stalls. Guided learning starts slower but compounds, because each identified pattern makes the next one easier to acquire.
What Grinding Builds (and Where It Stops)
Grinding works at first. That's what makes it so hard to abandon. Your first 50 problems teach you the basics. You learn how arrays behave, how to think about edge cases, how a hash map speeds up lookups. These are real skills. If you've never written a two pointer solution before, your first one is genuinely educational.
The next 100 problems expand your exposure. You see sliding windows, tree traversals, basic DP. You start recognising patterns you've seen before. "This looks like two pointers" becomes a thought you have before checking the solution tag. That recognition feels like progress, and it is.

But somewhere around problem 150-200, the returns start shrinking. You've seen the common patterns. New problems either look like something you've already solved (and you get them quickly) or they don't (and you're back to reading solutions). The rate of new learning drops, even though the effort stays constant.
That's the logarithmic growth curve. Rapid initial gains, then a long plateau where more problems produce marginally less skill. What drives the plateau is concrete. Grinding builds near-transfer ability: solving problems that resemble ones you've already seen. It doesn't build far-transfer ability, the skill of reasoning through problems you haven't seen. After 150 problems, most of the near-transfer gains are captured. More problems from the same categories just reinforce what you already know.
The learning science literature on how much practice volume contributes to far transfer is genuinely mixed. But the weight of it lands in one place: not much, unless the practice is deliberately ordered to build transferable reasoning rather than pattern-matching against memory. Grinding, by definition, isn't designed that way. If grinding were ineffective, nobody would do it. It works for a specific range of problems. The catch is that range doesn't cover what FAANG interviews actually test.
The Two Growth Curves
Both methods hit the same milestones at different skill levels.

At problem 50, both engineers are roughly equal with no clear winner. By problem 100, the gap opens. The grinder recognises common patterns. The guided learner understands why those patterns work, because each one was taught through the Understand-Identify-Apply sequence before any problem was attempted. She studied the two pointer pattern, why it works on sorted data, what constraint signatures trigger it, before she ever opened a two-pointer problem.
At problem 200, the divergence is visible. The grinder has seen most categories but still reads solutions for unfamiliar variants. The guided learner opens a novel medium and identifies the pattern from the constraints alone. A problem mentioning "contiguous subarray" and "at most K distinct elements" triggers the variable sliding window recognition. She doesn't need to have seen that exact problem before. By problem 300, the grinder is deep in diminishing returns. Novel problems still feel like coin flips.
The guided learner is constructing solutions for problems she's never seen. Each new pattern reinforced the meta-skill of identification, so she's learning faster, not just accumulating more solutions. The compounding curve works because of a specific teaching order: the three-phase model. When you understand why a pattern exists (Phase 1), learn to identify when it applies (Phase 2), and then practise applying it with graduated difficulty (Phase 3), each pattern strengthens your ability to learn the next one. Two pointers teaches you about constraint-based reasoning. That reasoning transfers to sliding windows. Sliding windows transfer to interval problems. The learning path is ordered so these connections build naturally.
Why Guided Returns Compound
The growth curve divergence has a specific inflection point. It happens around the 20th explicitly identified pattern. Up to that point, guided learning feels slower than grinding. You're spending time on depth that a grinder would skip. The grinder is three topics ahead of you by problem count. But around pattern 20, something shifts. New patterns start taking less time to learn.
The patterns don't get easier. The meta-skill of identification has been trained, and that changes the learning rate.
When you've been explicitly trained to identify 20 patterns, the 21st one is faster. You've developed a framework for reading constraint signatures. "Contiguous range plus optimise length" maps to sliding window. "Sorted data plus two-element search" maps to two pointers. "Overlapping subproblems plus optimal substructure" maps to DP.
That framework is the compounding asset. The grinder develops fragments of it through exposure. But exposure-based identification is unreliable. You might recognise a pattern when the problem looks similar to one you've solved. You won't recognise it when the framing changes, even if the underlying logic is identical.
There's a concept in learning science called desirable difficulties: learning conditions that feel harder in the short term produce stronger long-term retention and transfer. Guided learning with explicit identification training is harder than grinding. You can't just attempt and check. You have to understand the reasoning, trace the invariant, recognise the triggers before the problem becomes solvable. That extra friction is what builds the construction ability that transfers to unfamiliar problems.

But if your interview is two or more months away and you want skill that survives novel problems and time pressure, the growth curve matters more than the starting speed.
Recognising the Plateau
If you recognise three or more of these, grinding has probably run its course. That doesn't mean it was the wrong starting point.

The Verdict
One engineer solved 500 problems and had more exposure. The other solved 150 and had more understanding. In the interview room, understanding won. Grinding isn't bad. For the first 100-150 problems, grinding and guided learning produce similar outcomes. You're building basic fluency either way, learning how arrays behave, how hash maps speed up lookups, how recursion unwinds. After that threshold, the methods diverge. Grinding's returns diminish while guided returns compound, and the gap widens with every problem solved.
